My therapeutic approaches include…
a blend of Christian Counseling, Client-Centered, Choice Theory, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
I enjoy working with professing Christians who want their faith to be part of their counseling sessions (Christian counseling). I like to be respectful and not interrupt my clients when they are forming their individual thoughts (Client-Centered). I believe while we are products of our past, we are not prisoners of them and we can learn and apply new ways of thinking that can lead us to feeling and behaving differently resulting in strong relationships (Choice Theory and CBT).
The clinical jargon:
Christian Counseling works by recognizing the connection between a person's emotional well-being and their Christian faith. It allows clients to develop coping strategies that align with their personal beliefs. Christian Counseling draws upon the principles of Christianity to help individuals navigate conditions like depression and anxiety, relationship problems, grief, or anger.
Client-Centered Therapy allows clients to take more of a lead in discussions so that, in the process, they will discover their own solutions. The therapist acts as a compassionate facilitator, listening without judgment and acknowledging the client's experience.
Choice Theory is a Client-Centered form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy that focuses on improving present relationships and circumstances. This approach explores the basic human need of love and belonging and teaches that while we cannot control how we feel, we can control how we think and behave. The goal of Choice Theory is to help people take control of improving their own lives by learning to reframe their thoughts and helping them make connections with people closest to them.
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy stresses the role of thinking in how we feel and what we do. It is based on the belief that thoughts, rather than people or events, can cause our negative feelings. The therapist assists the client in identifying, testing the reality of, and correcting beliefs underlying his or her thinking. The therapist then helps the client modify those thoughts and the behaviors that flow from them. CBT is a structured collaboration between therapist and client and often calls for homework assignments. CBT has been clinically proven to help clients in a relatively short amount of time with a wide range of challenges, including depression and anxiety.
